50 Things That Make Me Happy

How many times in a day do we complain about the things we dislike? How many times a day do we do things that we hate? Our brains are hardwired for the negative, which is why we tend to focus more on all the unpleasant things in our lives rather than the positive. It’s why many of us with mental illnesses are able to recall all the times we’ve felt sad and alone and unhappy. It’s why whenever anyone asks us to think about something happy and positive, we end up drawing a blank and can only recall, with great clarity, the negative. It’s just the way our brains work.

One of my all-time favourite bloggers, the lovely Sammy over at The Self-Care Sloth, tagged me to make a list of fifty things that make me happy. Thank you so much, Sammy! And if you’re not following her, then what are you waiting for? Her blog is full of ways to look after yourself. It’s one of my favourite blogs and Sammy is one of my favourite bloggers. Please go and show her some love.

This is going to be one hell of a challenge, let me tell you now! Do I even have that many things to list? Well, we’re going to find out…

  1. Reading a good book
  2. Finishing work for the day
  3. A clean and tidy flat
  4. Pyjamas fresh out of the tumble dryer
  5. Cake
  6. Sitting down to watch my favourite shows (Grey’s Anatomy, Supernatural, Criminal Minds, The Flash, Arrow…)
  7. Belly laughing
  8. Game nights
  9. Blogging
  10. Pizza
  11. Unexpected adventures
  12. The weekend
  13. Getting good feedback in college
  14. Sleeping in
  15. Marvel movies
  16. Harry Potter
  17. A Sunday roast
  18. Singing loudly in the shower
  19. Playing Cards Against Humanity
  20. Ninja Sex Party
  21. Successfully facing a fear
  22. Dogs
  23. Waking up to the person I love every morning
  24. Baking
  25. Giving gifts
  26. Massages
  27. The blogging community
  28. The smell of a new book
  29. The feel of a new book
  30. Getting new books
  31. Having someone enjoy a book I’ve recommended

  39. Eurovision
  40. Stand-up comedy
  41. Helping other people
  42. Fluffy jumpers
  43. Successfully beating a level in a game without anxiety
  44. Anime
  45. That first sip of alcohol after a long day
  46. Waking up fully rested
  47. Rollercoasters
  48. My friends
  49. My family
  50. Dave

The last three were very cliche but it’s true. It’s even more cliche to say that I saved the best for last, but again, it’s true.

I’m actually ashamed to admit that it took me a while to complete this entire list. That being said, I’m feeling pretty satisfied and accomplished now that I’ve finished. That can be the bonus round – #51: the feeling of achievement.

This is actually a great idea to do, especially if you’re like me and suffer with anxiety and/or any other mental illness. On a bad day, this list is going to be a great reminder to me to practice a little bit of self-care and do something off of this list.

This is such a wonderful idea! I’m definitely guilty of focusing on the negative rather than what’s been good about my day so this will be a lovely post to write – thank you so much for tagging me! πŸ’– Such a beautiful list of things!

Aww, I love this post Kelly! It’s so nice to appreciate the big things and little things in life. There are so many things I love too… stationery, Sunday roasts, fluffy jumpers, weekends, massages, to name a few! I did this post a while ago but feel like I want to do an updated version, or at least write down everything that makes me happy to regularly remind myself of all the good things. Thank you for sharing lovely, I really enjoyed reading your list <3 xx

What a sweet list! It’s awesome to take a moment to look at things that make you happy, sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in the negatives. Something that made me giggle is fluffly jumpers, because, yes they’re so happiness enducing, but you don’t think about it in the moment. Have a great week!

Love this list! Thinking about happy things is the best. A clean and tidy flat, cake, belly laughing, pizza, stationery and blogging are a few of the things that would all be on my list, too!

I love this idea. I think that I would benefit from doing this when I am feeling really down over things, it will lift my spirit realising that there are so many things that can make me happy. I love the wide range of things you included, some of them wouldn’t even of crossed my mind such as belly laughing! It is the little things! Great post! xx

I loved reading your list! When I wrote mine I actually struggled to think of 50 things too so don’t worry! There’s so many of these that I agree with like pizza, Harry Potter, new books, warm blankets etc!

Thank you! It really is much harder than it seems, haha. Can’t go wrong with eating pizza while wrapped up in a warm blanket and either reading a new book or watching Harry Potter!
